Microsoft Excel SMALL function is the function that is responsible for returning the nth smallest value from the supplied set of values. In other words, we can say that the SMALL function in Excel retrieves the “nth smallest” values -like the smallest value, second smallest value, third smallest value, etc

 Array Large   functions

In this Excel tutorial we will go through the Large and Small functions, which allow you to pick out a specific ranked value from an array.

 The SMALL function in Excel

returns the nth smallest value from a range of cells. The syntax is:

=SMALL(array, k)

array is the range of cells that contains the values you want to sort.

k is the position of the smallest value you want to return, where 1 is the smallest value, 2 is the second smallest value, and so on.

For example, if you have the following range of cells:

A1: 10

A2: 5

A3: 15

A4: 2

A5: 7

And you want to find the second smallest value, you would use the following formula:

=SMALL(A1:A5, 2)

This formula would return the value 7, which is the second smallest value in the range.

Here are some other examples of how to use the SMALL function:

==================================================

To find the smallest value in a range, use SMALL(array, 1).

To find the third smallest value in a range, use SMALL(array, 3).

To find the largest value in a range, use LARGE(array, 1).

To find the 10th largest value in a range, use LARGE(array, 10).

The SMALL function is a versatile tool that can be used to find the nth smallest value in a range of cells. It is often used in conjunction with other functions, such as the MAX and MIN functions, to find the extreme values in a range.

Here is a table of the errors that can occur with the SMALL function:

Error Description

#NUM! The array is empty.

#NUM! The k argument is less than 1 or greater than the number of cells in the array.

       Excel - Array Large   functions

the Excel LARGE function is an array function that returns the kth largest value in a range of cells. The syntax is:

=LARGE(array, k)

array is the range of cells that contains the values you want to sort.

k is the position of the largest value you want to return, where 1 is the largest value, 2 is the second largest value, and so on.

For example, if you have the following range of cells:

A1: 10

A2: 5

A3: 15

A4: 2

A5: 7

And you want to find the second largest value, you would use the following formula:

=LARGE(A1:A5, 2)

This formula would return the value 15, which is the second largest value in the range.

The LARGE function ignores text values and logical values in the array. It also ignores errors.

Here are some other examples of how to use the LARGE function:

To find the largest value in a range, use LARGE(array, 1).

To find the third largest value in a range, use LARGE(array, 3).

To find the 10th largest value in a range, use LARGE(array, 10).

To find the largest value in the first 10 cells of a range, use LARGE(A1:A10, 1).

To find the smallest value in the last 10 cells of a range, use LARGE(A1:A10, 10).

The LARGE function is a versatile tool that can be used to find the kth largest value in a range of cells. It is often used in conjunction with other functions, such as the MIN and MAX functions, to find the extreme values in a range.

Here is a table of the errors that can occur with the LARGE function:

Error Description

#NUM! The array is empty.

#NUM! The k argument is less than 1 or greater than the number of cells in the array.
